Whats the best kind of public transport in Amsterdam and surrounding places?
I'm coming to Amsterdam in September for a semester and I need a way of getting around, I'm (most likely) going to be living in Dieman. Is it worth me investing in a bicycle? Also I heard that trains and trams were free in Amsterdam if you are a student? Is this true, and if it is do you have to be a citizen of the Netherlands? Also does anyone know anything about the Amsterdam Fashion Institute? Cheers!

You can take Electric Tramways, trains, Bus Service and river boats for commuting. But the local people love to raid bi-cycles. There are special cycle paths all along the roads in Amsterdam.

I agree with the previous post. Amsterdam has an abundance of bicyclists. The city really isn't that big, you can really even walk it if you need to. I would brush up on your bicycling rules of the road, since you would share the small streets with pedestrians and cars. WATCH OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS. My friend was walking the streets stoned and got hit by a bicyclist! Have a great time, it's a fantastic city!

In Amsterdam everybody uses the bike, you have to be carefull because they own the streets (they think hahaha) but in fact the trams do and they are ruthless. get yourself a good secondhand bike with a good lock cause they steel them like crazy in every metriocity, too bad, i just sold mine for 50 euro's, but you can get online and get one for real cheap at www.marktplaats.nl not sure about the free transportation thing, students get a pass but i think you have to be a citizen, Diemen where you gonna be is 8.7 Km from Amsterdam my work is that far and i go by bike and it takes me (depending on weather) about 25 min, do as the dutch and ride your bike girl, keeps you in shape lol have fun while staying here

There many kinds of public transports: tram, bus, subway and train. This is free for students who have a scholarship. A student travel cart comes with the scholarship which is granted by the state so you need to be Dutch. With a bicycle you can get your way around the city, most students do that as well. Diemen is a kind of suburb from Amsterdam so it's a bit further than when you would be living in the city. But having a bicycle is really convenient so I would invest in that, you can sell it when you'll go again. It doesn't need to be that expensive.

It's very easy to get around in Amsterdam by public transport. There are trains, trams and metro subways to take. Investing in a bike is worthwhile in Diemen as well, to get your groceries and just getting around town, because the public transport isn't cheap, especially on the short rides. You easily can get from Diemen to the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. Depending on where in Diemen you'll be staying, because it has 2 train stations, Diemen and Diemen-zuid (south). The Diemen-zuid has a trainline taking you to Amsterdam WTC, from there yo'll have to take the line 50 metro line to Isolatorweg, this one will stop a 5 minute walk from the Amsterdam Fashion institute. For information on trains check the NS ( dutch railways) website, posted below and for the metro and trams, the organisation is called short GVB, also posted below for you. Good luck.
