Trip to the Netherlands, flights, etc.?

Trip to the Netherlands, flights, etc.?
I want to go to the Netherlands. I'm a college student so... what's the cheapest way?? I'm looking to go either this Christmas break or else during the summer around May or June. I haven't a clue as to how to start preparing for the trip. Any help is appreciated!

how about doing some google searchs or expedia, or travelocity...geez

shop around budget airlines that fly from your area. I've paid between £30 - £50 flying to Amsterdams Schipol. prices tend to be lower during the winter. Just remember that the temperature is usaly between 1-5 degrees celcius in winter! The price of accomodation all depends on what you are looking for. if all you want is a place to shower and sleep i'd recomend a hostel as they are so cheap. If you dont want to share a dorm there are usally private rooms that you can book which are a little more expensive. From my experiance the cheapest hotels are at least double the cost of a hostel and not much better. Find a hostel where there is a buffet breakfast included in the price so you can eat as much as you can and maybe take some with you for the day as food can be expensive in tourist areas. check out sites like hostelworld.com Take your student card with you as many places offer a discount on admision for students especially in Amsterdam as it is a University city. There are plenty of cheap places to visit just do a bit of research before you go. Beer is not that cheap so if you are planing to do a lot of drinking make sure you budget for it!

Try a "cause" page on Facebook. Host an "ask" dinner. There is a great book on organizing "ask dinners". Sounds fun! Good luck.
2 :
That is a lot of money to raise additionally even if you have in a fulltime salary. The one practical route would be to try to find sponsorship from a local company. However you would need to set out a well considered case that would appeal to them e.g. why do you want to do it, what would be the benefit to you (e.g. your future, education, international outlook) and of course what benefit to them - e.g. could you get your local newspaper to run an article on you. This is publicity and companies love publicity On top of this look at other ways. Of course a part-time and summer job is one obvious way. Then look at all the things you have and what you don't need anymore, and try selling them on Ebay. Ask your parents to support you ie that you do more household chores and ask them if they would give you money for them to help you meet your goal It's a big ask for a year, so you might have to consider postponing it for longer, but of course it is worth a go. If you want it hard enough and are determined and enthusiastic then anything is possible.

Recycling in the Netherlands?

Recycling in the Netherlands?
Where and how can I recycle paper/plactic and glass bottles/batteries/ milk and juice cartons in the Netherlands? I am going to live in a student room/apartment. And how much does it generally cost to deposit a shopping cart? Do I have to prepare the change beforehand? I read a few on wikipedia so please, dont provide me a link there. Thanks for answering. typo : plastic bottle

Most supermarket carts will work on € 0,50 coins, €1.00 coins and some also on €2,00 coins. There are also special cart tokens around, that will work them. If you are in a supermarket without the right coin you can always ask at the reception desk or one of the tills, they will change you money for the right coin. You can recycle glas all over the Netherlands, mostly in big containers in your part of town, often located in the nearest shopping area. There you will often also find a paper container too. Sometimes your town (gemeente reiniging) will collect glass and batteries, as well as paper and green waste, if so, you will get a list with dates once a year. If you do not get that list when you start living in your new house, you can ring the 'gemeente huis', they will send you one or tell you the details. See your (nearest) supermarket for what they accept in recycling, often they have a place to put your batteries, sometimes also for milk jars. The bigger sizes plastic bottles have a deposit system, as do most beer bottles, you mostly return them to the shop you have bought them, or any shop that sells the same brand. Sometimes they also collect the platic bottles that do not have a depostit on them, but not often. But the Netherlands are not great in collecting used plastic and plastified cardboard from milk and juice cartons. Metal is collected with the normal waste and cleaned out before the waste goes into the ovens, (as most waste is burned rather than brought to a dip.)
2 :
The horrendous complications of the recycling system in the Netherlands can be best exemplified by a simple teabag: First, you must remove the tea from the bag, and place that in a compostable rubbish bin, the paper bag should be dried, then recycled in the paper bin. The paper bin is collected according to some arcane schedule derived from the movement of the stars or something, but all dutch people seem to instinctively know when it's paper collection day. I think they learn it at school maybe. The string which is attached to the teabag has to be removed and stored separately. Bizarrely enough, string recycling seems to be handled by the boy scouts, who descend at random, demanding string. The staple which attached the string to the piece of cardboard must be removed, and placed in the metal recycling bin, and finally the card should be separately recycled with the weekly card collection. The byzantine nature of these rules seems to be resolved in practice by dumping everything in a heap of rubbish bags on the street. If you're unsure if you've followed recycling etiquette properly, and are concerned about punishment, the proper thing seems to be to dispose of your rubbish on the next street so no-one can tell where it came from, or dump it outside a fast-food place and blame the foreigners. A proper, less flippant, answer is that you should check with your gemeente (city council) for precise details regarding your local collection and recycling details. The rules vary from city to city, but there's almost always a website which will help (or confuse) you. If you're in student accommodation, there will undoubtedly be some friendly environmentalists on hand to explain the rules, and to insist stridently that you follow them.

Help me figure out my European vacation plans! College student on a budget...up for the challenge?

Help me figure out my European vacation plans! College student on a budget...up for the challenge?
I'm trying to plan an itinerary for a three week or so European vacation. I am a 22 year old student and would like to spend less than 2500 (not counting airfare to Europe). I know that's possible, especially in Europe. I'd like to visit England, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Greece. Does anyone else have any other good suggestions? And which parts of these countries are not to be missed? Your input is greatly appreciated!

Get in touch with youre Students Union. USIT they are the International Travel Organisation for Students and will supply you with Cheaper Travel and Accomodation Worldwide. Just show them your Student Card. Hostel Accomodation is cheapest on a Budget. In England see London and Bath go to Wales,go to the Lake district in Cumbria, Try to see Scotland and Edinburgh. In Belgium you have Brussels ,De Groot Market Le Grande Place. The Piss Mannequin The Statue of the little Boy having a Piss and they put different Clothes on him nearly every Day. Then there is the Town of Brugge and Ghent. They have a lot of Festivals throughout the Year, Medieval Pageants etc. In Amsterdam there is the Riksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, The Anne Frank Museum etc.Anywhere in Italy is Brilliant no matter where you go. There is the Northern Lakes of Laggo Maggiore, Lake Garda ,Lake Como etc.Venice. Florence.Rome. Sorrento.Naples ,Pompei.Ihave not been to Germany yet but Berlin and Dresden and the Munich Beer Festival should be good . Have a nice Vacation Good Luck.
2 :
Parts you shouldn't miss: England : London, York, Bath Italy: Rome, Florence , Venice Germany: Munich Netherlands: Amsterdam Belgium: Brussels Greece: Athens, Mikonos Other suggestions: France: Paris, Normandy Scotland : Edinburgh Spain: Barcelona Austria: Salzburg Czech: Prague And yes 2500 are enough for 3 weeks. Enjoy
3 :
From Germany to Italy its worth spending a day in lovely Salzburg in the Austrian Alps, and going down to Venice by train through the mountains. Then down Italy, and across to Greece by ferry. In Germany the Rhine valley between Mainz and Bonn is really lovely. The vineyard covered hills above the river are full of old walled towns and castles crown almost every corner of the river. Its also right on the direct train route from Amsterdam to German Bavaria and Austria.
4 :
To maximize your experience, look at the low cost airlines (i.e. Ryan Air, German Wings, Easy Jet) to plan your general frame work. For places to stay look up Hostels on the net. For food, stick to pizza stands & donner kababs (ps dont buy any donner in the UK ... in the UK go for the prefab foods in the grocery stores). Use sites like Virtual Tourist to ask people in the know about specific areas. Do your reading and research at your home town library and on the net BEFORE traveling to the sites ... so you dont need a tour guide to tell you what things are. In the UK the great museums are free, but it costs to get into churches (huh?) In the rest of Europe, the churches are free and in many cases outshine the greatest castles and palaces. Dont forget about the parks ... especially in the summer. Lastly, if comming to Europe you need to take the time to visit the great American Cemetaries of WWI & WWII ... it is a life changing experience that must not be missed.

People to People Student Ambassador Program?

People to People Student Ambassador Program?
I got an invitation in the mail the other day to go to Ireland, Wales, Scotland, & England. After reading the letter, I got onto the website and looked at the itinerary and I also looked at other programs. I found a different program that I liked more than this one (you go to England, France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands & Switzerland). I reserved seats at the meeting for the letter that I got, and I have a couple of questions: 1. Can I change the program? 2. How much does it cost? 3. Is it worth the cost? Thanks!

My daughter participated in this recently. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As the somewhat apprehensive financier of the whole experience, I cannot say one way or the lother if it was worth the money, but, again, she thoroughly enjoyed it and still corresponds with several friends she made during the trip.
2 :
This organization tries to sell its programs to all schoolchildren. It's not an exclusive thing as it wants you to believe by sending you an 'invitation'. It's just marketing of a highly exorbitant vacation. Decide if you really want to participate and if your parents can afford it. I would suggest visiting these places for less with your family or later on when you're older by yourself.

its a vastly overpriced private tourist company ..selling to gullible parent with more money than sense ...any of their trip could be done for half of their price

AFS foreign exchange student program?
I am thinking of going to one of the following countries as an AFS exchange student all of sophomore year of high school. czech republic denmark france hungary netherlands portugal russia spain egypt brazil ghana What are your thoughts? Which country should I go to? Will it look good for college? Thanks!

i think Ghana is the the best place to be cos students who come to Ghana for their ecxhange programmes have an experience of a life time.
2 :
Russia!! :) Sorry to sound so damn enthusiastic, but it's so fashionable and classy aha. And Foreign. LOLL. That would be my first pick out of the list. I think France would look the best on your application, simply because French is the second most important language in the World. Especially Government jobs, such as United Nations etc. It's important to know :) My third pick is Spain :) The Shoe & Bag Shopping :) Aha, sorry if my answer is pretty girl-y :) But yesh, that's what comes to my mind with those countries. Fingers crossed you get to do the AFS Foreign Exchange Student Program!! -- Sisii
3 :
It will look great for college, although I do think you should wait a year. You list some interesting choices -- the organization will have you pick your top three. It kind of depends on what you are looking for out of the exchange. If you are going because you have a particular culture that interests you ... go in that direction. If you are looking at your ancestors, again, you have some guidance. If you are looking for a language that will help you in the future, consider Russia, Brazil or Egypt. All of those will have the need for competent linguists.
4 :
It will definatly look good on colledge! I would say france but you can go on there website and talk with some one who will help you woth your top three and you can request a free catalog with info (:
5 :
It will DEFINITELY look good in college!!! For a totally different lifetime experience.. i would suggest portugal, egypt, brazil and ghana because these countries are very different compared to US[ i'm assuming you're from US]. You would experience a totally different culture compared to what you might experience in some other European countries. I'm not saying that European countries and US are the same in culture or something but they are closer compared to the once i've listed above. i think it would be a great adventure to have a culture shock! a great story to tell my kids one day.. but then again, doing a study abroad at an early age is definitely worth bragging about!! Good luck!
6 :
You're not going to get a straight answer from anyone that doesn't have a little biased spin on it. I went to Japan, and it was great, but thinking back on it, I wish I went to someplace where people were less fanatical about it. If I could do it again, I'd have done Czech Republic or an Arab speaking country. Just so you know, AFS offers a scholarship if you let them choose for you. Not a bad way to defray costs.
7 :
Regardless of which country you choose check for accreditation, because Danish students can not get a year in an U.S High school accredited because the curriculum is so much more demanding in Denmark than in the US. There is no need to waste an entire year as I have seen several of my friends do. It is too late to be sorry about returning and being placed a whole year behind your peers when you have left for the destination. Research accreditation before you leave.

What is the average rent price for student accommodation in Ithaca NY? (Cornell University)?

What is the average rent price for student accommodation in Ithaca NY? (Cornell University)?
I am a Master student in the Netherlands and will be going to Cornell University for a research project from april to mid august. Since I am trying to figure out my budget for my stay, I would like to have an idea of how much it costs to rent a student accommodation on/near campus (I don't drive). And what does this price generally include? (internet, electricity, water.......) I forgot to mention that I am looking for rent prices of a furnished room, whether it's a 1 bedroom studio or a room in a house shared with other people.

Do the Netherlands allow HIV-positive PhD students?

Do the Netherlands allow HIV-positive PhD students?
I am a Mexican citizen. I am interested in pursuing a PhD in Europe. Since I am HIV-positive, already under treatment, I was wondering if in the Netherlands I would have access to insurance to continue my treatment. I was also interested in Germany, but it seems that the insurance will not cover my HIV condition (not to mention that in Bayern I would not even be allowed as a resident). What about other European countries in the EU? (I only speak Spanish and English) Thanks.

Insurance companies in the Netherlands are since one year obliged to accept people for basic health care insurance - they may refuse or set specific demands for additional provisions. So you having HIV should not be a problem to find general insurance, but if you need additional care, it might get more complicated. And to answer your first question: universities in the Netherlands allow HIV-positive students. They don't ask about it.
2 :
Er, that link only applies to Dutch legal residents... not to people there on a student visa. I'm not entirely sure what would happen insurance-wise, sorry. I'd recommned trying to call the Dutch embassy and ask.
3 :
Don't know the answer, but you might want to try and ask an organization which helps people who'd want to study in The Netherlands

I am 26 years old and have been working for a major shipping company for 4 years in supervisory position. I would like to enroll in the Netherlands for a postgraduate courses, which might make my career more promising. With some efforts, I've got 3 choices in the Netherlands. Of course, I can see their tuition fee, duration & some materials online clearly. But any of them might blow their own trumpet in advertising their prestigy and student's prospect. You gave lot of background information but did not indicate if you wanted to work in the same industry or change. If you want to continue in the shipping industry, Erasmus is your choice. Logistics and operations management is broader in scope and can apply to almost any industry that has logistical needs. The broadest scope is in Tilburg's program. HAN's program focuses on Europe and if that is where you want to be, it would be a good choice. To sum up, pick the one that matches your career ambition and talent. Good luck! cc

Should I purchase student travel insurance as primary or secondary?

Should I purchase student travel insurance as primary or secondary?
I am moving to the Netherlands to begin grad school for 2 years. I am currently paying for an individual health insurance policy provided by BCBS. I have had this policy for 3 years. I have no health issues, take no medication, am young and a picture of health. I.e. I'm very cheap to insure. However my rates are steadily increasing and my coverage is crap and I loathe BCBS just on principle. There are some very good insurance policies available to foreign students in the Netherlands that offer great coverage. I'm tempted to purchase a policy as primary and then cancel my BCBS. This is a risk if I no longer have a student status and I need to renew the student policy. In this case, if return to the US, I'll need to get another US individual policy. I'm afraid that I won't be able to get similar coverage for the rates I pay now (under$200/month) I don't want to pay for two policies, the more expensive one being even more useless than it is now while I'm overseas.
Insurance - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Since most domestic policies do not cover at all if you are out of the country the BCBS policy will be totally useless to you and you'll be wasting the premium. The premium for a policy generally has nothing to do with how long you have had it so the premium when you get back will be the same as the premium if you kept the policy in force. The only exception would be if your health condition changes or if the same policy is no longer available for new applications.

Scandinavian students, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, when compared to other countries, consistently rank at the top in Math and Science and, one can only assume, in the humanities as well. Could be the quality of the teachers in the US. Knowing that The Netherlands is part of Western Europe rather than being in Scandinavia could be a good thing for a teacher to know.
4 :
Because they break students up by their intelligence level, so that students are taught alongside peers who have comperable abilities and students are constantly challenged. In america we stick everyone togther and basically teach to the slowest kids so no one get left behind, holding the more intelligent kids back.
5 :
I don't think it is the quality of the teachers but the overall educational level of the citizens in general. Well-educated parents take an interest in seeing to it that their children are well-educated.
6 :
I don't know what studies have been showing this, so I won't comment on math & science specifically, but your assumption that this study must extend to all other subjects at the very least does not hold water in the Netherlands. Last year it was announced here that a massive percentage of the dutch born and raised teaching students were, at the end of their college education, incapable of passing the relatively simple dutch language exam required to actually be allowed to teach. So perhaps, at least here, it's less a question of massively better technique, and more a question of taking resources away from one subject to benefit another.

For that is YOUR perception..

Which one is better between Netherlands and Germany........?
I am interested to study either in Netherlands or Germany..i mean one of these countries ...i m little bit confused which one is the best country to study besides living, safety, or well known degree reputation all over the world. In addition, between these two countries, which country have comparatively better part time job availability for international students and which country people r more friendly or helpful towards foreigners . Plz help me by giving reliable information as soon as possible ......

I'm Dutch and I know that Germany is a lovely country ... but I don't know much about the studies etc. I do know that Dutch people are extremely helpful to foreigners (most of them anyway) and we have a lot of foreign students at our universities. If you don't have a preference (language, the country itself etc.) then I suggest you talk to your study advice at your (old) school and ask them for help. Oh and I do know that nearly 90% of all the students in holland have a part time job lol. So you'd have no trouble finding one. And a lot of Dutch people know English and like to boast that they do, so you'll have no trouble if you do not understand the Dutch language.
2 :
I live in the east of the Netherlands at the German border. I can say both country are good. But there are sum differences in education and culture. In the Netherlands people are very open minded and they would say what they think. They don't like hypocrism, but for foreigners this could be very offence. Like a Dutch cashier never would say;'how are you, have a nice day'. because most of the time we know they don't mean that. A Dutch person is always interesting in your life and tells a lot of his/her private life. Genuine is important, so just be yourself. Also the communication level is different between the Netherlands and Germany. In the Netherlands, the boss or teacher are at the same level as their workers or students. But the workers and students have respect for their superiors, but never say boss or sir. The bosses and teachers prefer to speak to them with their names, like John or Peter. At my university there were are lot of students from Germany. There are way more Germans studying in the Netherlands, then Dutch to study in Germany. That is strange, because Dutch people can speak German and a German don't speak Dutch at all. The differences with the Dutch and German education system is the informal Dutch culture and the modern learning. I've ask the Germans, why they are studying in the Netherlands. They say Dutch people are open minded, liberal and teachers are on the same communication level. But most Dutch teachers (we call them coaches btw) are from the working field. They already have a business or sum just stepped out of the real business and became a coach. A lot of masters studies in the Netherlands are given in English instead of Dutch. But both German and Dutch educations are good, but there are sum differences in teaching. Language: The second language of the Netherlands is English. 90% of the population can communicate in fluent English. We start to learn English at elementary school, as well we learn German and French at high school. Work: I don't know if you ever been to Amsterdam. Big chance if you walk in a store, restaurant, supermarket, cafe, etc, the personal only speaks English and don't speak a word Dutch. but for us Dutch people we can communicate perfectly in English even the old generation does. For work: http://www.undutchables.nl/ Cheers.

vacation idea for single student?

vacation idea for single student?
Hey people. I want to go on vacation and the chances are that i will be going allone. Im 21 years old and i want a relaxing and safe vacation. I want to know a company where who offers single vacation. I dont want to go to meet other people (relationship). Im not a guy who likes party, drink or those kind of things. I just want some nice place, to relax with other friendly and nice people. I planning to go for new years. Im from Netherlands... and hope you could help me out.

Will if you don't want to party then Florida is out ummm... if i were you i would head to Atlantis in the Bahamas its nice you can relex and have a good time the only thing is its alittle expensive but its definty worth the money. Have a good time.
3 :
Just start traveling alone. If you want a short break, the Belgium towns are a good start. You can also take a cheap flight to London, Prague or Bratislava. For a longer trip, Ireland, (lots of places to have a drink or a cola and meet some people without having to get drunk,) France, Spain (do not go to Salou, I would think,) but if you have the money, go to Scandinavia. For cheaper options, the former communist countries. All tour operators in the Netherlands will offer tours for young people, but I have never wanted to join them. The tours they offer that are not specifically for young people do tent to get older people, 50+. That is because most young people who do not like the "lets get drunk" kind of holidays travel alone. Stay in hostels, you meet people, pay just a little and most hostels you can book beforehand but you can also get a bed if you walk in on the day.

You could try Barbados! That country is paradise! Also, has so much to offer. You can take a tour bus to see the whole island! So much to do, so much to see! The nightlife is GREAT! Check Harbour Lights (http://www.harbourlightsbarbados.com/ ), Boatyard (http://www.theboatyard.com/ ) and St. Lawrence Gap (http://www.thegapbarbados.com/ ),(http://www.barbados.org/stlaw.htm ). St. Lawrence Gap has not only clubs, but restaurants, hotels, etc.. Such as The Ship Inn (http://www.shipinnbarbados.com/ ), Reggae Lounge, etc.! Bridgetown, its capital, is known for duty-free shopping ranging from shoes to clothes to jewellery to books. The beaches are fabulous, try Accra (known as Rockley Beach), Maxwell, Miami/Enterprise. The people are friendly, some food are different (if you always want to try something different, you can try Fridays in Oistins (a town known for its fish market). If interested, you can check out The Barbados Museum (http://www.barbmuse.org.bb/ ). Like I said, there's so much to see in this whole island. You can try some cruises such as Jolly Roger (http://www.tallshipscruises.com/ ). You can also check out Atlantis Adventures (http://www.atlantisadventures.com/barbados.cfm ), Harrison's Cave (http://www.harrisonscave.com/ ), among other places, if this have sparked your interest, you can check out for more information below: http://www.barbados.org/ http://www.visitbarbados.org/ http://www.funbarbados.com/ http://www.totallybarbados.com/ If you are in need of cheapest accommodation out there and not care about luxury but at least clean, then I suggest Pegwell Inn Guest House, it's close to amenities (across the street is Southern Plaza), public transportation (right at the road) - a big bus to go into Bridgetown or Speightstown, maybe a minibus but for sure, a route taxi (route 11) that goes into the capital and all costs $1.50 BDS) - you could even take a taxi but it's expensive), beaches, and within walking distance, internet cafe (if it's still there), laundromat, post office, restaurants, pharmacy. For an all-inclusive, try http://barbados.org/allinclusive_vacations.php and you could check for reviews if needed - http://www.tripadvisor.com/ Hope this helps.

I will certainly recommend you to ask for prices at local agencies, so you don't end up in problems with various custom and immigration departments. Those shorter courses range in price from 2-4000 dollars. Be very clear about the language you want to study. There is a lot of difference between speaking Dutch and English. If you want to get some advices how to finance the trip some I have known have been successful by approaching the local Round Table chapter, when they attended business schools. These chapters consist of local businessmen who have a lot of connections international. It might pay of giving it a try.

thoughts on going to university in holland from the UK?

thoughts on going to university in holland from the UK?
I'm aware it's cheaper to be an international student in the Netherlands, than one here in the UK. Many Dutsh speak three or four languages so the language barrier would not be an issue at first, and I would hope to develope my skills of the language over time. Living a language is obviously much different to being tought it. Thoughts on this? Is it completley ridiculuous just to save a few additional years of student debt?

Do you speak Dutch? Yes. They speak English as well as at least two, three other languages. However, the primary language of instruction is in Dutch. Either you're fluent already or you take classes which most/all universities there offer prior to enrolling.

Travel to Mexico, Jump the border into the United States illegally and try to get caught. Once caught, tell the authorities that you are a citizen of Holland. The US will fly you there and probably pay for your college and maybe even your children's and grand children's college too. It's worth a shot.

ATTN! Gifts for Host Family in the Netherlands?

ATTN! Gifts for Host Family in the Netherlands?
I'm going on a student exchange to the Netherlands! Looking to bring some gifts for my host family. Something Canadian-ish.. Host Mom: Likes cooking, house wife, enjoys running, playing guitar Host Dad: Likes spending time outdoors.., just your average man Host Brother: Likes architecture, baseball, music, reading, sailing Host Sister: Likes fashion, music, harp ANY IDEAS? It doesn't have to follow their interests necessarily.. Thanks in advance :)

Having done this myself its hard to bring gifts to people you don't really know. That's why i suggest covering your bases. I would bring stuff from Canada that really culturally Canadian and is relevant to their interests. I would also bring them something that's non cultural as well. ie box of chocolates or wine.

All could be good, but what really matters are YOUR language skills and what you want to learn.Of the list you give then Danish students usually have the best English, that's not to say that other countries are bad. You pays your money and takes your choice, any will be an enjoyable experience.

I'd say ITALIA, we are the best at everything ! :D .......be italian.

can I travel when my visa expires but my residence permit is still valid?

can I travel when my visa expires but my residence permit is still valid?
Hello, I am a student in the Netherlands at this moment. My multiple entry visa will expire on October 11th; however, my residence permit is until January 21st. My question is, I am going to France on October 20th and will it be okay? I will legally be a resident in the Netherlands but without a visa. Will it cause problems when I have to go through customs - I mean, what happens?

the visa got you into netherlands the residence permit allows you to stay. I would say that leaving the netherlands after the visa expires would cancel out the residence permnit. Only because you are leaving the country, and wanting to come back, I strongly suggest you get another entry visa.

Well, first of all I'm a student from the Netherlands and I'm studying an education which is fully in English called IBMS (International Business and Management Studies). We are supposed to make a proper business plan about an idea we already got. How can I make a proper business plan and which parts should I definitely use? In the Netherlands you should not worry about housing problems because many cities build houses explicit for students, practically on demand. Very nice example are these container houses. In fact student housing is a whole different market, working people should not be permitted there. For foreign students this should really be taken care off by the university. Where I live they sometimes provide fast Internet at rooms. There are several houses and bigger buildings for foreign students. So ask about for the possibilities. Many traditional houses in the inner city are rent to students who are members of a certain students corps. Should you have to choose between countries, then think of how trust-able and interesting they may sound to your future employer. This is also valid for places. To me, the Netherlands seem to be a better choice and Scotland much further away. For quality of live and being able to have a good time Holland is much more interesting and close to where you may want to be. From what I have heard, students are often placed in work-groups for accomplishment.
2 :
I disagree with Alfred on this one, and as an ex-student advisor for a Hogeschool here in the Netherlands dealing with International students, I can assure you that in many cities it is very hard to obtain cheap accomodation even if you are a student. Univeristies do not always arrange accomodation for either domestic or foreign students. This is up to the student to arrange for him/herself in principle. However they do sometimes have a person/dept to assist with info and some institutions have limited places for accomodation (but not all), or at least an info pack available to help foreign students. However expect the bare minimum as accomodation. Here for example is the page from the VU university confirming what I say http://www.vu.nl/en/programmes/exchange-programmes/accommodation/ and here is the page from NUFFIC which is the organisation dealing with higher education and a good starting point for foreign students http://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/preparation-stay/preparing-your-stay/housing I have lived in the UK as well as the Netherlands (although it was in England not Scotland, but I have been many times on hols to Scotland), so this is my take on the NL vs Scotland with regard to living and studying there. Quality of life - probably equal to be honest in regards to costs, socialising, and living in general. Scotland has a lot more space than the Netherlands (population dense) but the Netherlands has a far better public transportation network (which given that many students don't have cars is a plus) Education standards are very high in both and the qualifications are recognised from both countries (official translations required in some cases). So there is not much difference there. I have a Dutch HEAO and a British BA which are comparable. Accomodation - well as pointed out, the Netherlands has far less housing, but student accomodation in the UK is not exactly the Ritz either. This is more private rentals and very basic as well. To be honest I would also find it difficult to make the choice as both are really good places to live & study in. Therefore maybe you should look more into the actual courses available in English (you can see a listing here for the Netherlands http://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/dutch-higher-education/search-international-study-programmes) and see which courses suit you more, and base your decision on this Good luck in any respect.

The 'D' type of visa is your residence permit, and is valid only for the country issuing the visa. The 'C' type that has been added to your residence permit (D+C) allows you to travel for non-revenue purposes... so, no the D+C visa will not allow you to do an internship in any other country apart from the one that issued the visa.

In the Netherlands, all students must make a working-paper on two different subjects, in our case, these are biology and chemics. You have heard right. Indian passport holders only need an Airport Transit Visa (ATV, type A) for the following Schengen countries: Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Slovakia, Spain. The ATV requirement is waived for those who hold a valid visa for Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Ireland, Japan, Romania, Liechtenstein, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America. You can transit via Amsterdam without a visa provided that you: • continue your journey to a third country on a connecting flight • hold a ticket with confirmed seats for your next destination • hold all documents required for your next destination • have your luggage checked through to your final destination • do not leave the airport transit area Source(s): EU-Visa Code, Article 3, 5. Hi. You are prob. referring to the OV Studentenkaart. You can ONLY get that card if you are a Dutch student in the Netherlands, sorry. If you take the same route regularly (e.g. every other day to your university) think about getting a monthly ticket. Otherwise ask your Dutch University for help.
2 :
What you mean is the OV card which entitles students for free travel either during the week or at weekends and discounted travel other times You can only get a Student OV kaart if you qualify for a student grant, and therefore meet the below conditions: "Full-time students may apply for a student grant, which includes a student travel card (OV-studentenkaart). Applicants must meet the following requirements: - A citizen of an EU or EEA country - A full-time student on a higher education course in the Netherlands which is eligible for a student grant - At least 32 hours of employment per month - An employment contract for that work - Under the age of 30 when you apply for a student grant (you may continue to receive the grant up until you turn 34, but only if the period during which you receive the grant is uninterrupted) - hold a Dutch bank account in your own name" http://www.uu.nl/uupublish/homeenglish/tussenpaginassce/financialmatters/studentgrantsand/47007main.html If you do not meet these requirements there are some special cases in which a student might be entitled to the regular student grant, you can read more here from the Informatie Beheer Groep. http://www.ib-groep.nl/International_visitors/Study_in_the_Netherlands/general.asp However getting this is not a simple process. When applying for a student visa (assuming you are non-EU) you would have had to prove that you could afford to live in the Netherlands as a condition. Secondly there are admin hurdles which make it difficult as you can see in the below posts http://forum.expatica.com/OV-studentenkaart-t92055.html However, if you don't ask, then you will never know - so give it a go of course. EDIT: Sorry 'M', it's not true that you have to be Dutch. If you are an EEA passport holder and entitled to a student grant then you are also entitled to an OV card as well. Other cases for grants under consideration as I mentioned about with the IB group making the decision on this. However, if you don't ask, then you will never know - so give it a go of course.

My daughter was involved a few years ago. it's a good program, but it's expensive.
2 :
took my 11 year old daughter to their 'informative' meeting because no one would discuss the cost with me. As it turns out, the tuition for the Australia program is some $5,200 plus approx $800 for additional transportation, spending money, passports, etc. As I only work full-time at a clerical job, I had to inform my daughter we couldn't afford it after their presentation showed how much fun she would be missing. We weren't alone; I saw quite a few teary-eyed children on the way out - no doubt they also belonged to working-class families who couldn't afford the trip. My beef is the way they absolutely refuse to discuss costs until after their fluffy presentation. They should pre-screen the applicants according to household income as it certainly is a (maybe THE) deciding factor. It is so hard on the lower income children to get all psyched up just to hear 'No, we cannot afford it'. It is a program for the priviledged and wealthy, not the everyday gifted child, and they should advertise it as such.

How do I move from the U.S. to the Netherlands permanently?
I'm a college student in the U.S. right now but I don't know how I will get a job in the Netherlands because I heard they only hire people with EU citizenship, but what could I do to move there because its dream to live in Europe, so how do I get a resident permit? I don't like the mindset and government in the U.S. Please help.

How do you know you would like the "mindset and government" in a European country? Many Europeans certainly do not. Hvae you been watching the news about France today? If you up and move every time you are not pleased with the gov't someplace, you may never settle down. The only way to get a job in a European country is to have an amazing and badly needed skill...so better get to work on that...and take a look at countries that are not members of the European Union. For right now, do not worry about the gov't...worry about finishing your own education, finding a decent job, getting some life experience...maybe even working to improve your own country. Kids fresh out of college simply do not get work permits in Europe.Maybe you could take a smester or a year of university in Europe on a student visa...to get some experience there.
2 :
well, that's true for all EU nations. it's not that they hire only EU citizens...the law simply obliges employers to prioritize EU citizens. if they are to hire somebody from outside EU, they have to prove that nobody's qualified to fill in the post within the EU zone... and rarely does it happen here really (i mean employers sponsoring your working permit) coz it would take up to 6 months really for their application for your working permit to have results... what some people do, they look for partners here. when you are registered as a legal partner of somebody here, you will automatically be given a working and staying permit. and don't worry about finding a job just becoz you don't speak dutch. there are lots of jobs here that don't necessarily require proficiency in the dutch language... i've lived in Holland for 2 years now. I work offshore and just stay in Amsterdam when it's my off. I only have staying permit not working permit...
3 :
It's very difficult to emigrate from the U.S. to the Netherlands. People with EU citizenship do get first dibs on jobs.

First you go to the informational meeting. They will give you a packet of stuff and go over everything with you. Then you have to send in an application, get recommendations, and be interviewed. after you are accepted you'll have a meeting once a month with the group you are going with until the date of the trip. You'll do diffrent projects and assignments and get to know the people you are traveling with.

It's safe. Someone from your school probably nominated you to go for displaying good sportsmanship or friendly social interaction or just being a good, average leader. I personally haven't gotten to go on the trips (if you attend the meetings and stuff, they'll go over how fundraising works and all, since you have to pay for it yourself). It's a unique opportunity to travel to different countries, meet new people, and gain new experiences. I suggest you go if you can afford it, since the trips they take differ with each year and you may or may not be nominated again.

You need to check out a Dutch government website. If you got married, she should be able to join you. I think most Latin Americans can go to Spain without visa, (she needs to check with the Spanish embassy in Lima), so you could meet up there, maybe get married in the sunshine.... Good luck!

My bf is an exchange student from the Netherlands, would it be weird to visit him this summer?
I'm graduating and hes moving back (we're in hs). Would it be weird if i went and spent 2 weeks in the Netherlands with him? I think it would be fun, money isnt really an object either...what do you think?

The Netherlands are like -11 deg.C right now.I'd say wait until it heats up or something. If you don't mind the cold, then go ahead.

People to People Student Ambassador Program?

People to People Student Ambassador Program?
So I got this thing in the mail about a people to people student ambassador program to England, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. I am just wondering about the cost of this trip. I know the program is legit because one of my friends went on the trip to Australia. And i would also like some information on fundraisers you did to raise the money to pay for your trip.

You can always check the People to People site for the prices on each trip. I didn't fundraise much for my last trip and i deeply regret that. Some of my friends were selling candy at their school. Others got a job or they talked to the owners of some restaurants for support. Have fun fundraising!
