How would you interpret this?

How would you interpret this?
I was hanging out with group of people at a pub/restaurant. We were all seated around a big round table. They were friends of my friend (I didn't know them). I was talking to two people next to me and we were having a great conversation. During the conversation I looked around the table and saw two of her other female friends smiling at me. They both had a certain look in their eyes. They weren't invovled in the conversation (the table was long so they were about 10 feet away). They were really attractive foreign exchange students from the Netherlands. What does this mean? How would you interpret this? Were they just being friendly? Or were they flirting?

What's your univeristies' coolest sustainability initiative?

What's your univeristies' coolest sustainability initiative?
Maybe your university has covered their entire roof with solar panels, made an alliance with local organic farmers, or purchased hundreds of acres of rainforest to save precious species.... The academic world (often) advocates principles of sustainability, but what do universities do themselves to put these nice principles in practice? I am creating a booklet of best practices on academic institutions, and i am especially intersted in projects that are initiated by students, or that are doen in cooperation with small business or companies. The booklet is meant to inspire managers, teachers, policymakers and students in the Netherlands to start greening their universities. Links are most appreciated

Mine is using algae to obtain fuel. Seems to be ok. Next year they are going tro up the production and sell to the power company.

I attend a small college in Minneapolis called Augsburg, so some sustainable stuff may come easier than to a large uni, but some things the school does I like include... >All our energy comes from wind power. >We're located in the city, so cars are not required. Biking is big, and we have a bike share program (with a local bike shop), and an hour car on campus. >The school is a site for a CSA drop-off. We have a small garden as well. The program on campus that serves meals to those in need uses 6 shares from this farm during the growing season. >We compost a lot more than we throw away (this was largely student done, but is in its infancy as we just began food service with a new company) All of the packaging on the food sold (like cups and containers) is biodegradable. Fair-trade products on campus, as well. >There is a fair amount of curriculum dedicated to environmental issues, as well as a new 'class' that for the incoming freshmen starting next fall (which will run 3 years) called "the fate of the earth" and it focuses on consumption. Also, through school, I took a class called "Sustainable Cities in North America" this summer. We visited Portland State University, which has a lot of "green" aspects in their buildings, and could be useful to you...

Hogeschool in the netherlands?

Hogeschool in the netherlands?
Can anyone tell me what is hogeschool in the netherlands, are they high school, college or university? Is it that only good students go to university and others go to hogeschool? And generally how many years they spend in hogeschool to get a degree? My friend spent FIVE years to get a degree, is he a looser? Thank you.

Roughly equivalent to college. As a professor once said to me, in university we train you to be a scientist. If you want to learn how to do a job go to a hogeschool. Intellectual level is similar but a hogeschool's program is aimed at skills you need as a professional. You end a hogeschool with a bachelor's degree. 4 years is standard but 5 years is not at all uncommon. Any longer and you get to call him a looser.

You are required to apply to the Embassy of the Country where you intend to spend the most of your time on your stay ( not necessarily the first Country ) - if you are flexible on this then I would suggest that you chose the Country that has an Embassy situated close to you so you can deliver and collect the required documents quickly and easily. This link should help - http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/103-schengen-visas.html

Living in Netherlands?

Living in Netherlands?
Hi everyone. I will be living in the Netherlands as from next year and that is only if I make it through the final internship interviews in Septermber. Basically I would like to have more information about the country (i.e. the cost of living including accomodation and anything suitable for a 21-year old foreigner). I will be staying in Amsterdam if that would help. I would love to know the approximate monthly cost...i do not mind living at a students' residential area (i'm a student now...). Your help will be highly appreciated. If there is anyone who has done an internship in Netherlands... please feel free to share the experience. Thank you very much!!!

My son is a student in AMS, and he is living on an allowance of 700 euro, inclusive everything, even holidays and washing his clothes. Apparently he was able to save money to visit Greece this summer. So I guess 700 is enough. Of course it all depends on how simple you want to live. Do you need your cell phone, and make a hundred telephone calls each day, or do you just visit them? Do you want to be lazy and have a car, use public transport, or do you want to visit your friends using your bicycle. Do you make your own dinner, or do you want to order pizza a few times per week? Do you want to clean your own house or hire someone to do it for you?
2 :
I worked in NL for some time. About the cost of living that depends on what you are used to. If you live in UK then it's more or less the same. Housing sure is expensive! However if you live in a student house, with shared kitchen and share toilet than it might be cheaper, say 200 to 300 euros minimum. If you want your own kitchen and toilet then prices go higher! Renting a room is someone house might be an intermediate solution. As for what you would spend monthly, that depends on your lifestyle, if you eat out often (that is expensive in NL at least when compared to southern countries), if you go to the movies, etc. Also if you use public transport or go by bike. Bike is cheaper, sure, as it should be one time investment (unless it gets stolen, of course). But again, depends on what is your country of origin (to compare) and what you are used to.

I'm considering moving to the Netherlands, can anyone give me some information?

I'm considering moving to the Netherlands, can anyone give me some information?
I'm currently an American university student, I'm considering moving to the Netherlands after I finish graduate school. I'm of Indonesian descent, so I do know plenty of people that live in the Netherlands. I have begun learning some conversational Dutch, but I'm taking my time since it will be at least 5 years before I'll even begin any serious work on moving. I have some questions about the country, can you please answer them for me? 1. How are the schools in the Netherlands? 2. How much is English spoken in the country? Is it spoken rarely? Often? Is it used much in the workforce or in schools? 3. I'm a devout Catholic, are there many Catholic churches there? 4. What about cost of living? Is it high in Amsterdam? And taxes, how high is income tax? 5. I heard that the Netherlands is one of the most densely populated nations, how does this affect your lifestyle? 6. Are there any noteworthy differences between Dutch and American culture? 7. I usually don't like to venture into politics, but I'll make an exception in this case. Do most Dutch people approve of Balkenede? Are the Christian Democrats well-recieved? Or do people usually favor the Socialist or Labor parties better? 8. How's the weather? Does it snow in the winters? Are the summers humid or dry? How much rain do you get per year? 9. Do you air a lot of American tv shows on TV? How do you personally like Dutch shows? Thank You, and Happy Holidays!

1. The schools in the Netherlands are mainly public schools. We have elementary schools (kindergarten + primary schools, from 4 till 12 years), secondary schools (4, 5 or 6 years long, depending on what level) and higher education (university etc.) The secondary school is divided in vmbo (4 years), havo (5 years) and vwo (6 years). Only with vwo you can go to university. You'll probably do havo or vwo. In the havo and vwo, you have to choose your subjects. You have different 'directions', alfa and bèta. You'll see when you get here. 2. Knowledge of English is widely spread in this country. English is a compulsory subject in secondary schools, and almost all primary schools offer English in the last two years. You won't have any problems with that. Only some older people might not speak English at a decent level, but children learn English very early because almost all tv programs are not translated but subtitled (they see English everywhere). 3. There are lots of Catholic churches here. Although the Netherlands were, originally, a protestant country, there are Catholic churches. You'll find more of them in the south (south of the big rivers), where the majority of the people is catholic. But most of the people here aren't engaged with any religion, the majority does not have a certain religion (you can check wikipedia). 4. The cost of living is relatively high in the Netherlands. Also Amsterdam is expensive, but that's everywhere in Western Europe. There is not one percentage of income tax, it varies from 30% to more than 50 %, depending on your income. http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet_inkomstenbelasting_2001 5. Because the Netherlands are densely populated (and because it's a really flat country), we always use the bicycle for transport. You'll find bicycle parking lots at every railway station (those are numerous too). Almost everybody goes to school by bike. 6. Well, one of the main differences is that we are not so materialistic, the size of plates is smaller, practically everything is smaller. We have to share the little space we have with everybody ;) We also don't celebrate Christmas in the same way you do. We don't 'do' Santa, we celebrate with family and decorate, but not much more. Some people go to church. What we do do, is Sinterklaas. He arrives in late November on a steam boat with his 'helpers' (black petes, Zwarte Pieten), and he gives gifts to children. It is celebrated on the 6th of December (Saint Nicholas' Day), or the evening of the 5th (pakjesavond). Sinterklaas was brought to America by Dutch colonists and 'transformed' to Santa Claus, by the way. 7. Well, most people do actually. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been re-elected. But there are really many political parties in the parliament, so the majority of the people favor somebody else. Although Labor parties are favored, there is a shift to the right-wing (Geert Wilders), who is against people from other countries (Allochtonen) 8. The Netherlands have a sea climate, soft winters and cool summers. The average temperature in July is around 18 degrees, in January around 3 degrees. But the weather can be treacherous, sometimes we have cool wet summers, sometimes it is 30 degrees, sometimes it freezes in winter (or snows like now, though that is rare), sometimes it does not get below zero the entire winter. Sometimes it even freezes at night in late April! 9. There are lots of American tv shows on Dutch television. Oprah Winfrey, dr Phil and as the world turns are all broadcasted here. But personally I favor Dutch shows, they're more suited for us and made for the Duch, I think. Good luck in the Netherlands!

Host family in the Netherlands?

Host family in the Netherlands?
Okay so here's the deal. I'm a Norwegian student who's gonna study in the Netherlands 2011-2011 (I will by the time I leave Norway) through the YFU international exchange program. (www.yfu.org) YFU will interview shortly after you apply for the exchange program before you pay them a certain amount of money (depending on where you're going) which will cover your stay, school fees etc. Normally, YFU will then find a family they believe is a good match for you and interview them as well. Here's the catch: You can't choose where in the country you'd prefer staying, something I find pretty crucial, but you can in fact find a host family of your own wherever you want and ask YFU to interview them. I have very close friends in one of the Netherlands' regions, which is why I want to stay there instead of some random Dutch city, but I have no idea how to search for a host family in the Netherlands. Could someone help me out? Link me a couple of good sites or something? Thanks in advance! *2011-2012, sorry

You can try Marktplaats. It is like the small ads in a newspaper, but on internet. And many or even most people in the Netherlands start looking there if they want to sell or buy something, but also if looking for something different. Here is a link to the front page of the site: http://www.marktplaats.nl/ As you can see it is just in Dutch, but you can place English language ads too. I would start with searching, search for host family or words like that. If you get no results, try placing an ad in 'diverse' . I have not searched for you, so I do not know if there are already some hosting offers available. An other route could be to contact a site like couch surfing or hospitality club, and ask the people there to help you find the right place or way to search. Both sites are not for hosting long term, but the people might know where you need to ask: http://www.couchsurfing.org/ http://www.hospitalityclub.org/ Or ask your friend to place an ad for you in the free local paper, so you will end up in the same area.

What do dutch people think about their royal family?

What do dutch people think about their royal family?
Hello I'm a spanish student and I'm working for a project about dutch monarchy. I chose this subject because I think is really curious that such a socially developed country as The Netherlands has a royal family. I'd like to know how liked they are there. Here in Spain depending on the area you live, opinions can be extremely different, in Madrid people love them, but for example in Barcelona is the oposite. Does it happen in the netherlands too?? thanks for your colaboration!

There was an article in the DutchNews few months ago stating: - 55% of the population in the Netherlands were very proud of the Royal Family - 12% were very against them Around 30% saw Princess Maxima as their favorite royal member, placing her as the #1, Queen Beatrix #2. I can't find the article but I remember it caught my attention because the dutch didn't like Maxima in the beginning when her relationship with Prince Willem Alexander was made official. Now they love her! Dutch like how liberal the Dutch Royal Family is, and that the royal members are less formal and closer to the commoners (compared to the British Royal Family). I wasn't aware that the Spanish Royal Family wasn't very popular in Barcelona. Could it be related to the fact King Juan Carlos kept the title of Count of Barcelona for himself after the death of his father?

How/where do I buy a eurail pass?

How/where do I buy a eurail pass?
I need to know how to buy a eurail pass and what type I should get. I will be traveling for 15 days in 8 countries: Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Italy. Will any pass cover all of that? Also, can I reserve train seats from Canada ahead of time (as opposed to at a station in Europe when I get there) and will a eurail pass cover the overnight trains (with beds)? By the way I am 20 years old and a student.

Go to google and type in "man in seat 61". Its a fabulous website giving all the information you require. If you still have questions give me a shout if you like , I have done similar trips over 19 countries in the past 4 years . Its the best way to travel and the Sleepers are a hoot (laugh) as are hostels, both safe and cheap.
2 :
You can actually purchase those online. Just go to eurail.com. You can purchase different countries or just one country. You can also go to www.bahn.de. That is the German rail system. Have a good time. The food is awesome.
3 :
If they still have the "Youthpass", that's the one most people think of when they think of Eurrail, find out how to do that. They used to come in one month passes, and I think you could buy more than one at a time. I hear that reservations are more necessary than I remember, and some places have surcharges that you MUST pay to get on the train. The "sleeper" cars cost a bunch more, but I slept on many trains, no reservations, no worries, everyone just pulled out the seats and it was like one big, six person bed. (and I slept with five people who at the beginning of the day, had been complete strangers to me). I did that several times over the course of two months. Make sure you get your international Student ID card, because you can probably still get into all kinds of stuff for free with it. WELL worth whatever you have to pay for it. And get your International Youth Hostel card at the first hostel you stay at, but find out where they are...they have a website. just search. As Sabre said...safe and cheap. I did it almost thirty years ago. I might be a bit more cautious today, but you will have a blast! Don't overplan, though...have a plan, but be flexible, and don't get your reservations all set from here, because you might have to change your plans. What if you get to Paris, and find out there's this really neat festival in, say Bretagne and you didn't have that on your list. You might really HAVE to go, and then, if you have reservations for Munich , you won't be able to add it in. Make a plan...be flexible! and have fun!

My boyfriend is a Dutch citizen? How can he move to America without marriage?

My boyfriend is a Dutch citizen? How can he move to America without marriage?
I'm an American citizen currently in college in the US. I don't want to get married young, but I want to be with my boyfriend post-grad as he lives in the Netherlands. I want to go to graduate school in America though (for American law), so that means at least another 3 years post-bachelors. Is it possible to not get married and somehow have him move here even if he's not a student (meaning no F-1 visa) and if he does not have a specialized trade? Poster 1--haha, I accidentally added the question mark after the first part. Shite. Poster 5: Yeah, basically. I'm too young to get married but not too young to have him live with me and pay for my rent haha...This is growing up. At least I'm not immature enough to marry at the spur of the moment and think it will actually last.

he has to become a citizen of the United States of America in order to enter here. Otherwise, he's one statistic of the illegal immigrants that everyone in the states is complaining about.
3 :
if he joins some branch of the army, airforce,or navy he could come here(the illegal problem people are talking about is only mexicans all other can come here without be discriminated against)
4 :
have him get you pregnant then have his 'anchor baby'......sometimes helps :D otherwise have him just file a visa application with what skills he does have and hope for the best......america loves more europeans here.
5 :
So, you're wanting him to come over here so you can shack up while in college? Grow up! He would have to become a citizen or marry you.
6 :
Maybe. He's dane so he's low risk. Maybe a long term extended tourist visa renewed every year or so?
7 :
He could incite some sort of hat feather revolution and come to the U.S. seeking amnesty. For this to work though, the revolution has to be one that the American government opposes. I recommend working with the Communist Hat Feather Party: www.hatfeatherproletariat.org I worry that my answer is almost TOO helpful. You have my apologies if this is in fact the case.
8 :
He can apply for permanent residency. He can apply for a work visa if a company hires him. Really there is no other way but those unless you two get married.

Whats the best kind of public transport in Amsterdam and surrounding places?

Whats the best kind of public transport in Amsterdam and surrounding places?
I'm coming to Amsterdam in September for a semester and I need a way of getting around, I'm (most likely) going to be living in Dieman. Is it worth me investing in a bicycle? Also I heard that trains and trams were free in Amsterdam if you are a student? Is this true, and if it is do you have to be a citizen of the Netherlands? Also does anyone know anything about the Amsterdam Fashion Institute? Cheers!

You can take Electric Tramways, trains, Bus Service and river boats for commuting. But the local people love to raid bi-cycles. There are special cycle paths all along the roads in Amsterdam.
2 :
I agree with the previous post. Amsterdam has an abundance of bicyclists. The city really isn't that big, you can really even walk it if you need to. I would brush up on your bicycling rules of the road, since you would share the small streets with pedestrians and cars. WATCH OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS. My friend was walking the streets stoned and got hit by a bicyclist! Have a great time, it's a fantastic city!
3 :
In Amsterdam everybody uses the bike, you have to be carefull because they own the streets (they think hahaha) but in fact the trams do and they are ruthless. get yourself a good secondhand bike with a good lock cause they steel them like crazy in every metriocity, too bad, i just sold mine for 50 euro's, but you can get online and get one for real cheap at www.marktplaats.nl not sure about the free transportation thing, students get a pass but i think you have to be a citizen, Diemen where you gonna be is 8.7 Km from Amsterdam my work is that far and i go by bike and it takes me (depending on weather) about 25 min, do as the dutch and ride your bike girl, keeps you in shape lol have fun while staying here
4 :
There many kinds of public transports: tram, bus, subway and train. This is free for students who have a scholarship. A student travel cart comes with the scholarship which is granted by the state so you need to be Dutch. With a bicycle you can get your way around the city, most students do that as well. Diemen is a kind of suburb from Amsterdam so it's a bit further than when you would be living in the city. But having a bicycle is really convenient so I would invest in that, you can sell it when you'll go again. It doesn't need to be that expensive.
5 :
It's very easy to get around in Amsterdam by public transport. There are trains, trams and metro subways to take. Investing in a bike is worthwhile in Diemen as well, to get your groceries and just getting around town, because the public transport isn't cheap, especially on the short rides. You easily can get from Diemen to the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. Depending on where in Diemen you'll be staying, because it has 2 train stations, Diemen and Diemen-zuid (south). The Diemen-zuid has a trainline taking you to Amsterdam WTC, from there yo'll have to take the line 50 metro line to Isolatorweg, this one will stop a 5 minute walk from the Amsterdam Fashion institute. For information on trains check the NS ( dutch railways) website, posted below and for the metro and trams, the organisation is called short GVB, also posted below for you. Good luck. And you can always ask, a lot of people speak english and be willing to help you to get around. I used to take these lines to work for over a year. Good luck!!

what type of life can a teenager expect in sweden?

what type of life can a teenager expect in sweden?
I'm going to be a foreign exchange student next year and I want to know more about the countries I'm considering. At first I wanted to go to Netherlands but that was booked. Now it's between Sweden and Switzerland, what are the similarities and differences. Where would a guy like me have a better time, especially if i want to party a lot? Also I might be in a small town in both countries so take that into consideration. Thanks.

Sweden? Most likely lots of parties and hot girls.. Just don't think you won't have competition. If you're in a "big" (laughing) city being an American will be an even bigger advantage to get laid. Depending on what kind of person you are you can expect a social life and all that comes with it. Good looks helps. A lot. Even unsocial people can get away with being unsocial if they're hot because of that particular stereotype. I have never seen any drugs where I live (a town or whatever of 13 000) so if you like those kinds of things maybe you should consider staying in a big city. I bet you'll meet someone who knows how to get it. Even I do and I live in a very small place. Swedes might be the second best in Europe outside the UK at speaking English but don't think that means that everyone can speak fluently. Those who likes to skip school party the most.. To make up for being stupid I guess.. and those don't speak good English. I'll think you'd have a great time but it depends on what kind of a person you are and what kinds of people you hang out with.

It's definitely worth it. I've answered a lot of questions about the People to People program recently, so just search for them, and you can read my responses. It doesn't make sense to keep repeating my answers, but they have programs for even 8th grade. They actually have programs from 5th-6th grade, all the way up to 12th grade, in high school. It is safe, and an experience that is worthwhile. You can even use your experiences as one thing you did while in high school, for your college application personal statement, as I did. You get a homestay for 2-4 nights, and can also get high school credit. But only some high schools actually award the credit. I knew a lot of people who got credit, but my high school did not allow it. So it depends on your counselor and school district. I know that there are a lot of bad things people say about the program, but it's usually about the cost and not the actual program itself. So you should look at that observation too. Or about the safety, or that it's just a travel agency trying to get money from kids. I don't think it's that. There are usually 4 adults who travel with all the students, who are all teachers, counselors, or people associated with schools and education. They can also people who you can get recommendation letters later too, if that is an interest you want. All in all, the program is definitely worth it, even if it costs a lot. If you think about the cost if you went by yourself, you'd spend twice or three times as much, so I think the cost is fair. Good luck on your choice.

I'd like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it's hard to understand why people don't stay home. Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere - anywhere but home.

summer is more expensive. Find a hostel if nothing else, and book it early WHILE you look for a room to rent. There's a good chance you could sublet. Check various expatriat sites and things like that. Find another student to share it with. GOOD LUCK!
2 :
http://www.studentenkamers.nl/zoek.asp?std_id=26 Check that link for room and apartment avaiable in Leiden. 3 months then better and cheaper rent a room or house. Good luck

Trip to germany, netherlands and switzerland(maybe) from Canada?

Trip to germany, netherlands and switzerland(maybe) from Canada?
Hi I am looking for any helpful advice about travelling in europe. Theres two of us, and we have just started preparing for the trip. So far, we have a ticket booked to frankfurt in the first week of June. We plan to stay in Europe for 12 days and thought about getting a student rail pass for 3 countries, so that we can visit amsterdam. We have chosen switzerland as a third country (does anyone know of a better neighbouring country to germany, other than france?). I was wondering if we were to be on the lowest budget, how much should i put aside for accomodation, food and other spendings (travel not included). Also, how fast do hostels book up, should we start renting rooms right now? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

www.ryanair.com Flights around Europe for a cheap as one English pound. Most fly out of England and Ireland. Have fun!
2 :
Hi, I'd go for Austria rather than Switzerland. It's much cheaper, including travel--though if you're on a student pass that mightn't be an issue. However Vienna is expensive, though the cultural stuff is great. If you go to Austria visit Halstatt, the most beautiful place in the world (up in the Alps). And Salzburg. The alternative would be to visit the Czech republic, particularly Prague, which is amazing. In terms of your budget, work out how much you think you will need, then double it. The best way to deal with financial stuff in Europe is to load up a Visa account with money prior to your trip, then withdraw it as you need it. Since most countries use the Euro you won'[t have a problem exchanging money from country to country. (However I think the Czechs still have their own currency.) Amsterdam is amazing and very friendly. Look out for the mad cyclists! And I'm told that some of that stuff in the hash bars is very strong, so watch out. Book everything you can before you go. It's a mega-hassle finding places to stay while you're travelling. If you visit Berlin--which you should--stay in one of the Circus hostels. They are very high standard and not expensive. It's true there are very cheap flights around Europe (e.g. Ryanair) but they're not quite as cheap as they look--when you add in taxes etc. they mount up a bit. Still they are very good value. Enjoy!
3 :
Yea, start booking hostels now. Frankfort really just about only has one HUGE hostel by the river. Once it fills up, there's not much there for cheap accommodations. Amsterdam will DEFINITELY fill up quickly. If you want to stay someplace well known, like the Bulldog, you'll have to book early. I came skidding in, unexpected, a few years back and ended up staying at a christian hostel in Jordaan. It's quite nice, but don't let on what you're really up to during the day, if you stay there, and don't bring any of it back with you. It's a bit austere, but if you're enjoying Amsterdam to it's fullest potential, you won't notice. You won't notice much of anything, in fact. Two words: Space Cakes I went to Austria, also. There's a really great hostel up there called the Treehouse. We stayed there for a week. It's out in the country with tons of great hiking. They have a killer video library if it rains. Make sure to order the "Heart Attack" for lunch, at least once. The little diesel commuter train that takes you out there is a trip, by itself! Make sure you call ahead. The folks at the Treehouse will drive to the station and pick you up. I'd recommend spending a couple of days in Berlin, too. Lots of history, and great bars, to boot. We've stayed at the Circus a couple of times. There are two locations, one of which is right next to a U station. I've never been to Switzerland. I'll have to go back and check it out. It's kind of an island, in a way. Tours frequently steer around it. I get the feeling that the Swiss are a tad indifferent to tourists. Could be wrong on that score. Plan on spending a couple of thousand dollars for food and accommodations. You could get by with about half that, but please don't try. You'll want to spend a few dollars, here and there, to see things and go on boat rides and up in balloons and to get into castles and things. It all costs, and you don't want to come home without having had a few inexplicable adventures. Definitely get the student rail pass, if you qualify. We had the dual rider pass, which was good, too.

There are hotels from the Accor group, which are clean and cheap (you only pay, what you use: www.etap.com Actually the youth hostels in Germany are very nice (were renovate because of the international soccer contest): http://old.web02.djh.de/international/html/index_map.jsp?ID=5 Other cheap airlines: www.germania.com and www.airberlin.com I heard, that Poland an the Czech Republich are very nice (just pay attention with your wallet).
5 :
Switzerland is a slightly dull country, hash is semi-legal there (I think it still is anyway?) but i imagine you would have got your fill of that in Amsterdam. You have Austria as an option of course, but is Denmark not too far for you? I hear Copenhagen is great. If Prague (Czech Republic) is an option though, go for that. Beautiful city, cheap beer (no where near as cheap as once it was, but still damn reasonable), and you could go to Munich on the way. Or you could even go via Austria.

I want a longer program like 6-8 weeks but all i find is 2-4 week programs, I've been looking like crazy but can't find one. Oh, it must be for high school students, so this excludes and university and college exchange programs.

Most exchange organizations offer summer programs. However, I sure encourage you to go for at least a semester or better yet a year to get the full benefit of the culture and language immersion. Make sure any program you choose is CSIET listed. You might also check with your school counselor for a recommendation. Reliable ones tend to be AFS, YFU, Aspect, Rotary. You might check out the CSIET list and go though those programs and see what they have to offer. There are around 100 - all conveniently in one spot, and you can see if one fits your needs. You can also check out this website which is full of information on the exchange experience from application to return home: http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/ Good luck!

The living cost in Maastricht, Netherlands?

The living cost in Maastricht, Netherlands?
I am going to spend one year in Maastricht, doing my master degree. I managed to get a cozy room for 350 euros. How much more should I expect to spend each month for the other things, considering that as a graduate student I concentrate most of my time for studies, not going out. Do you think 800-1000 euros a month (including housing) can be enough?
Netherlands - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Yes, with a room for €350, you will get by with €800, €1000 is better and would give you the option to travel a bit in some weekends. Mostly a furnished room (can contain nothing but carpet and curtains, or can be completely furnished) does include the cost of power, water and property taxes. In short mentioned as 'inclusief', ask your landlord to state what is included and what you will have to pay extra. Phone is almost never included, you might want to consider an internet phone service (skype) to contact home and a cheap mobile prepaid for your contacts within the Netherlands. And check that your medical/health insurance is paid for. It is compulsory and needed, as the costs of healthcare will need to be paid and can run up high if something does go wrong. With €800 you will have as much as most students, specially if the costs for your study are all paid for already.

As a citizen of an EU member state you also hold a citizenship of the European Union, with all its rights and priviledges. Any additional citizenship will not make you any less an EU citizen. In the EU your US citizenship has little relevance. Most EU member states offer lower tuition fees or no fees at all to “home” students. Some states consider any EU citizen a “home” student, while others require students to have lived in the EU (or certain other qualifying countries and territories) for a specified time.

Best place to study abroad... Lund, Sweden... Leiden, Netherlands... or Budapest, Hungary?
I am looking at the University of California's education abroad programs... and I narrowed them down to the cities mentioned above. College academics are not the issue for me here because they all look good to me, but I'm looking for the best atmosphere for a college student. I'm looking for a fun place to meet friends and experience a new place I've never been to before. Is anyone familiar with the student atmosphere in any of these areas? (P.S. ... I am leaning more towards Sweden or Hungary becase those programs are less expensive)

I'd say Sweden. It's a very developed country with high standards of living and have some great deep-rooted universities. I heard that there are no tution fees for universities in Scandanavian countries in general (not sure about that). Life there is quite and peaceful. A note to be taken is that the climate there is quite unique. They have 6 months where the sun keeps on shining throughout the whole day and 6 months where the sun never shows up and its generally cold, not sure if this kind of atmosphere suits you. All the best.

OK, it's not a very good day for me, so forgive me if I don't answer exactly to your question. BUT Why would you travel so far, on an apparently limited budget to visit Germany and Switzerland ? I lived in Frankfurt for 3 years, and not only it is the worst city in Germany, but Germany itself is not worth visiting, especially when you have Spain (for partyyyy ! and cheap too), Amsterdam (oh yeah), south of France and Italy ? I am French, believe me, in Switzerland you'll only see chocolate and medicine, and in Germany you'll be so lonely you'll cry. There is a great website for traveling by train in Europe (which is the best way, fast too) http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/launch/home/ www.sncf.com Bon voyage

That's a big trip. The first thing I'd recommend is to communicate with the official tourism offices via these links. Send them an email - they're very helpful: Germany:http://www.tourismrankings.com/Germany/ Switzerland:http://www.tourismrankings.com/Switzerland/ Netherlands:http://www.tourismrankings.com/Netherlands/ The next tip is that hostels can be very good, but if there are three of you remember 3 x 1bed cost exceeds the cost of many 3 bed hotel rooms with better facilities and better locations saving 3xperson transportation costs . Check out the alternatives here: Netherlands:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Netherlands/ Amsterdam:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Netherlands/Amsterdam/ Switzerland:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Switzerland/ Geneva:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Switzerland/Geneva/ Zurich:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Switzerland/Zurich/ Germany:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Germany/ Munich:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Germany/Munich/ Berlin:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Germany/Berlin/ Hostels can book up, but of course the instant booking websites can assist a lot. July thru August and holidays like Christmas and Easter are your other busy periods. Happy Hols !!

The first thing I would say is that they have a very small amount of properties available - 38 in the whole of the Netherlands - that is very strange to me :0) They are registered under a parent company with the Chamber of Commerce which is a positive sign as all businesses have to do so, and scam ones generally don't have this registation of course https://server.db.kvk.nl/TST-BIN/ZS/ZSWWW01@?TYPE=NDNR&NDNR=32107357&NSDN= It is registered with the official telephone guide (usual for a scam operation) http://www.detelefoongids.nl/bg-l/16382345-rent+a+house+service/vermelding/ The site looks quite good actually and I cannot find anything online that says it is a scam or anything so I really am leaning towards it being reputable - but obviously it does not have a lot of properties on offer I will nevertheless "star" your question in the hope that one of the other Dutch contacts will read this and be able to help - (USS - especially you as a maestro of scam sites :0))

They are an official company as blabla states, but they are not a member of any Dutch Real estate organisation. They seem allright, just dont pay them a deposit or you first month of rent untill you sign the contract and get the key.

Information is below.

I would turn the question on it's head because you are looking for graphic design courses in English I presume, which will narrow down the selection considerably A good site to get all the answers about studying as an international student in the Netherlands is http://www.nuffic.nl/ Checking the section on this site for courses in English using the keywords "graphic design" then there are 7 courses and at different levels so you need to check for yourself which is best suited to you http://ispacsearch.nuffic.nl/showprogrammes.aspx?action=search&search=graphic%20design&fid=6 Entry requirements vary per college and also per course, but if you click on the 'full description' then they will give the entry requirements or a link to their own website with them As foor staying - for long term course, if you graduate then you can reside legally in the Netherlands for a further 6 months after graduation to seek a job. The time spent living in the Netherlands does not contibute towards time spent in gaining citizenship though. You can read more on the immigration dept site here http://www.ind.nl/EN/index.asp

Want to be a Foreign Exchange Student.?

Want to be a Foreign Exchange Student.?
I want to go to Europe to be a foreign exchange student for a semester next year and i need to start enrolling in a program. I want to go either Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, or Belguim. What country should i go to and can you tell me about any good programs for it!! also do i need to be able to speak the language of the country?
Studying Abroad - 1 Answers

If you are enrolled in college, then go to your study abroad office and they will help you with everything! Schools sometimes have organizations they contract with (like IES or CIEE) and they also have inidividual partnerships with different foreign universities. Individual exchange agreements tend to be less expensive than outside organizations like IES. You must first find out what kind of programs your college offers and that will guide which location you choose. Any of those countries would be great choices--I lived in Barcelona for two months and it was amazing. I have been to Amsterdam several times and it is just as amazing too. You should always try to learn the language of the country you are traveling to or studying in. It's often considered rude if you don't give it a go. Moreover, it will be to your advantage to learn that language. Life will be much easier for you (ie. when you are buying train tickets, ordering food, at the store, finding bathrooms, asking for directions, etc) Plus, learning a foreign language while living in that country is a lot less difficult and much more fun! Most schools/programs have language classes for beginners, most schools/programs require you to take a language class during your study abroad program, and some have special intensive language classes before the term starts that will really give you a jumpstart and some excellent preparation. Just make sure to speak with your school's study abroad coordinator as soon as possible to make sure you meet any requirements and have enough time to explore a few different programs to find the one that works best for you.

Well the nearest post office is just around the corner from you https://securepostplaza.tntpost.nl/TPGApps/locatiewijzer/public_control/locatiewijzerIndex Albron Foodservice Langendk 21 4819 ES Breda Open from Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00 and Sat 08:30-17:00 However what normally happens is that the postman will try to deliver a package to your home address. If you are not at home at the time of delivery then you will get a form through the door with details of what you can pick it up from (usually the closest post office if they have a storage facility) and you will need to take the form and ID to collect it the folllowing day. It is held (I think) for two weeks there. The postman will often try to leave it with a neighbour as well, and so read the form carefully as will tell you of it is at the post office or a neighbour (and the address will be mentioned) Good luck

Peace moger hacks to death Innocent student in war protest, is this ok to liberals?
Disturbed anti-war protester can't find soldier, kills civilian with axe instead! http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=cp_fc6h5g7n673&show_article=1 AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - A U.S. citizen has confessed to using an axe to kill a Dutch student after failing to find a soldier to attack, his lawyer said Tuesday. The suspect, Carlos Hartmann, 41, of Tecumseh, Mich., has confessed to the Sept. 8 killing on a train platform in the southern city of Roosendaal, defence lawyer Peter Gremmen said. Gremmen said Hartmann wanted to punish the Netherlands for its support of the war in Iraq. of course this makes perfect sense! I HATE WAR SO I'll MURDER SOMEONE!!! liberals is this ok? or do you condemn this action in the name of "peace"????!!!! FYI: serious question for you libs. I didn't implicate all of you. i asked a simple question. after all some lefties do think it's ok to murder in the course of defending your point of view. simply answer the question. don't attack the messenger. and YES HE WAS A LIBERAL! a CONSERVATIVE wouldn't have his insane point of view and seek to MURDER a military enlistee as this psychotic nut job did! yeah no military dudes around guess i'll murder this innocent student! liberalism is clearly a mental disorder! G: Of course it's a serious question and i noticed you didn't answer it with a simple yes or no. i'll take that as a yes in support of murder. mcpuke has nothing to do with this question. but since your insanity drew it out, why not ask yourself why clinton admin covered up the MUSLIM connection to mcpuke and elohim city of the racists? try amazon.com "third terrorist". thanks for the idiocy!

mans a nut case , secondly that happened in the Netherlands , the land of fruits and nuts . Where everyone's a little nutty and a little fruity .
2 :
Liberal? Just sounds American to me
3 :
Should I condemn all conservatives because some nutcase bombs an abortion clinic? If so, and by using your 'logic', you are just as insane as this ax-murdering psycopath. Logic is MUCH different than inference. Please learn the difference.
4 :
Why would it be okay to liberals OR conservatives? Geesh.
5 :
HANGEM
6 :
Sounds like a far left anarchist act!!! not surprised!!!
7 :
No it isn't ok. But, if we're gonna go against nasty hypocrits, then there are some that have killed more than one person. This guy is dispicable. But you already knew it wasn't ok to any reasonable person...so why fan the flames with a silly ad hominem attack?
8 :
Of course not. This guy is mentally disturbed. No sane person of any political persuasion would condone his actions.
9 :
Of course not. The man was obviously mentally deranged. Do you blame all conservatives for the Westboro Baptist Church crazies? Do you blame all Muslims for the murder of Theo van Gogh? Do you blame all white people for the lynchings of blacks? Do you blame all Germans for the holocaust? You simply cannot take the act of one person and apply it to a group of people. It's faulty logic. It would be like saying all men are pedophiles because most pedophiles are male.
10 :
It is just like they want to cut and run and cause the innocent deaths of millions and it is OK to hate the war and kill the innocent in the libs mind, they can do no wrong in their minds. Just like the way they play with the info of Muslims wanting to hit our school children like in Russia but on a bigger scale. I say try all Libs and the drive by media and when we get hit again we do to these libs what the Muslims do and send them all to their moon god. Libs think they can do what ever.
11 :
Of course this is not ok to liberals. Only neoconservatives believe that violence is the only way to bring about peace.
12 :
The man is whacked up in the head anyway. USA's involvement in Iraq has not been helped or hurt by the involvement of Switzerland.
13 :
if this is a serioius question... then you guys are worse off than I thought... no it's not ok to liberals... anyone who's been outside, watched TV or listened to the radio in the last 50 years would pretty much gather this through simple logic.... and you're clearly using an implied accusation here... if you're even aware of what you're doing... and why did mcveigh bomb the building again? look into it... EDIT: er... I clearly said... "no it's not ok to liberals"... see above... can you read?
14 :
you know us liberals may be liberal, and more liberal than the us likes. but were not crazy. murder someone, and youre going to go to jail... ofcourse we dont condone murder in the name of peace... we didnt condone the iraqi invasion did we? its liek fucking for virginity. now as for the american view on liberalism. we are not communists. communists, are actually far right in practice. do you even know what liberalism stands for?
15 :
No, this isn't ok to any sane person. But then, you wouldn't know anything about sane people. Your whole purpose in life is to attack liberals at every opportunity, no matter how hateful or dishonest you have to be. In your mind, is every conservative to blame when some religious nutcase terrorist goes and murders in the name of "life"?
16 :
I don't condone any murder. The Netherlands has hardly been a driving force behind the invasion of Iraq. The American is clearly insane. The political views of the criminally insane are moot. Why do you seek to make this lunatic emblematic of all liberals? Your argument that he must have been liberal to have set out to attack a soldier holds no water.
