AFS foreign exchange student program?
I am thinking of going to one of the following countries as an AFS exchange student all of sophomore year of high school. czech republic denmark france hungary netherlands portugal russia spain egypt brazil ghana What are your thoughts? Which country should I go to? Will it look good for college? Thanks!

i think Ghana is the the best place to be cos students who come to Ghana for their ecxhange programmes have an experience of a life time.

Russia!! :) Sorry to sound so damn enthusiastic, but it's so fashionable and classy aha. And Foreign. LOLL. That would be my first pick out of the list. I think France would look the best on your application, simply because French is the second most important language in the World. Especially Government jobs, such as United Nations etc. It's important to know :) My third pick is Spain :) The Shoe & Bag Shopping :) Aha, sorry if my answer is pretty girl-y :) But yesh, that's what comes to my mind with those countries. It will look great for college, although I do think you should wait a year. You list some interesting choices -- the organization will have you pick your top three. It kind of depends on what you are looking for out of the exchange. If you are going because you have a particular culture that interests you ... go in that direction. If you are looking at your ancestors, again, you have some guidance. If you are looking for a language that will help you in the future, consider Russia, Brazil or Egypt. All of those will have the need for competent linguists.

It will definatly look good on colledge! I would say france but you can go on there website and talk with some one who will help you woth your top three and you can request a free catalog with info (:

It will DEFINITELY look good in college!!! For a totally different lifetime experience.. i would suggest portugal, egypt, brazil and ghana because these countries are very different compared to US[ i'm assuming you're from US]. You would experience a totally different culture compared to what you might experience in some other European countries. I'm not saying that European countries and US are the same in culture or something but they are closer compared to the once i've listed above. i think it would be a great adventure to have a culture shock! a great story to tell my kids one day.. but then again, doing a study abroad at an early age is definitely worth bragging about!! You're not going to get a straight answer from anyone that doesn't have a little biased spin on it. I went to Japan, and it was great, but thinking back on it, I wish I went to someplace where people were less fanatical about it. If I could do it again, I'd have done Czech Republic or an Arab speaking country. Just so you know, AFS offers a scholarship if you let them choose for you. Not a bad way to defray costs.

Regardless of which country you choose check for accreditation, because Danish students can not get a year in an U.S High school accredited because the curriculum is so much more demanding in Denmark than in the US. There is no need to waste an entire year as I have seen several of my friends do. It is too late to be sorry about returning and being placed a whole year behind your peers when you have left for the destination. Research accreditation before you leave.
